Fractionated Stereotactic Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Medial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: A Case Report
نویسندگان
چکیده
An 18-year-old left-handed male harbored intractable medial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) underwent fractionated gamma knife surgery (GKS) instead of open surgery, considering the mental retardation and diffuse cerebral dysfunction. GKS treatment parameters were: target volume, 8.8 cm(3); total marginal dose, 24 Gy in 3 fractionations at the 50% isodose line. The patient has been free from seizures since 9 months after GKS, with notable improvement in cognitive outcome. Fractionated GKS could be considered as a safe tool for seizure control and neuropsychological improvement in patients with MTLE.

Epileptology in Czech Republic Stereotactic amygdalohippocampectomy for temporal lobe epilepsy: promising results in 16 patients
Objectives. Minimally invasive procedures for treating temporal lobe epilepsy have been investigated recently, namely stereotactic and gamma knife amygdalohippocampectomy (AHE). However, the results are not fully satisfactory. Our aim was to evaluate efficacy and side-effects of stereotactic AHE mimicking the neurosurgical procedure in terms of extent of the lesion. Methods. 16 consecutive pati...

متن کاملGlioblastoma multiforme occurring in a patient treated with gamma knife surgery: case report and review of the literature.
Stereotactic radiosurgery is being increasingly advocated as the primary modality for treatment of vestibular schwannomas (VS). This modality has been shown to arrest tumor growth, with few associated short-term morbidities, and with possibly better hearing and facial nerve preservation rates than microsurgery. Radiation-induced oncogenesis has long been recognized, although stereotactic radios...
متن کاملEarly and delayed MR and PET changes after selective temporomesial radiosurgery in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
We report a patient with medically refractory mesial temporal lobe epilepsy treated by gamma knife radiosurgery. In lieu of a microsurgical procedure, an entorhinoamygdalohippocampectomy was performed with a gamma knife and low marginal doses (25 Gy). The clinical and imaging studies, including CT, MR imaging, 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), and long-term follow-u...
متن کاملGamma Knife Radiosurgery for Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Many patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy continue to have seizures despite medical therapy. For these patients, one recourse is surgical resection of the mesial temporal lobe, with its attendant risks. Noninvasive treatment with Gamma Knife radiosurgery is under active investigation as a possible alternative to open surgery. Accumulated evidence from multiple studies shows radiosurgery ...
